The company said there were just a handful of reports among "the hundreds of millions of bars sold"—but the incident relates to a trend.

Recall of 11 “Healthy” Breakfast & Snack Items Warns of a Growing Safety Issue

The word “crunchy” to describe health-focused people is thought to have been first inspired by the outdoorsy set for whom granola was a favorite food for its wholesome sustenance. For one granola brand with products sold through national grocers, that toothsomeness recently reached the point of concern after “foreign material” was discovered to be embedded in the bars.
Granola is arguably a basic in the American diet, with brands like Nature Made, Bob’s Red Mill, and KIND products on the market. MadeGood is another maker of one of the most prominent granola bar brands, found at a wide variety of in-person and online retailers, including Amazon.com, Target, Walmart, Whole Foods, Meijer, and more, and the MadeGood website states their products are sold throughout the U.S., Canada, and other international markets.
Previously, the FDA announced on Dec. 9, 2024, that Riverside Natural Foods Inc.—the parent company of MadeGood—was issuing a voluntary recall “due to the potential presence of a piece of metal in the product, which, if consumed, may result in a safety hazard.” The MadeGood website published a FAQs page about the recall with more details, saying “The piece of metal is a small, flat brush bristle, and highly unlikely to be present in our products. We received seven complaints out of the hundreds of millions of bars sold, and no injuries have been reported. We are recalling these products as a precautionary measure because we believe transparency and the safety of our consumers are paramount.”
On Tuesday, February 11, the FDA updated the recall, issuing a Class II risk level for the existing notice, indicating that the bars could cause temporary or reversible medical harm, but are unlikely to cause serious illness, injury, or death. The announcement says a total of 2,408,883 cases were included in the recall.
A list provided by MadeGood outlined the names of the recalled granola products along with product information, while noting “Items with a Z after the Best By Date are excluded from this recall [e.g., 10/14/2025 Z].”
The recalled product details are:

For anyone concerned they may have already consumed a recalled granola bar, the MadeGood website states: “If you’ve already consumed the product, there’s no need to worry … [because] no injuries have been reported. ” Still, consumers are asked to return any recalled goods to the retailers of purchase for a full refund.
There have been multiple food recalls in recent months for contamination with foreign matter, with metal appearing to occur the most often. Examples of this have been on hot cocoa and vegan meat. Experts have explained that’s typically a result of processing equipment breaking off into the product.
