If winter weather and early nightfall mean you’ve been hunkering down with comfort dishes and maybe even a Valentine’s baked good or two, shoppers will want to check their pantries for a popular ingredient—especially in a large segment of the country.

On Monday, February 3, the FDA updated a voluntary recall of 7,920 total bags of GreenWise organic pecans halves. The update indicated this is now classified as a Class II recall, which involves “products that may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects.”

“Undeclared walnuts” are the given reason for the recall. Tree nut allergies can include walnuts, pecans, cashews, almonds, pistachios, and more—but not peanuts, which are legumes and are classified as a separate food allergy.

Because people can have an allergy to one specific type of tree nut but not others, according to Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), a missing nut ingredient on a label could result in an allergic reaction. The Cleveland Clinic lists reactions to tree nut allergies as the second-most common food-allergy cause for trips to the emergency department.

Identifying product details as listed on the recall notice are as follows:

  • GreenWise Organic Pecan Halves
  • Sold in 8-oz. plastic printed package
  • Lot number 18228
  • UPC 041415212336
  • Best By Date of April.23.2025 stamped on front of the package
  • Recalled by Pecan Star & Nut Corp., San Antonio, TX 78205

The recall notice says the pecans were distributed in the following states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

GreenWise is a brand line owned by Publix, and the GreenWise organic pecan halves appear to be sold in Publix stores and online at Amazon.com, though it is possible the pecans appear in other retailers.
