If you’re heading into another winter weekend thinking a batch of brownies or some homemade granola might help cozy things up, double-check your ingredients. Coming in hot on the heels of a separate recall for undeclared nuts, an important recall connected with a popular supermarket chain was just updated, now being given the second-highest FDA warning level. This one’s a bit of an unusual error.

On Thursday, the U.S Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced an update to a previous recall, originally issued on January 6, for Wegmans brand Organic Dry Roasted Salted Almonds in 12-ounce (oz.) clear bags. (Note: One portion of the FDA report lists the recalled almonds as “salted” while it’s listed as “unsalted” in the Reason for Recall section of the same report. A recall notice on the Wegmans website confirms they are “unsalted,” along with an accompanying product photo.) The FDA’s notices state the product was distributed in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and New York.

The recall went into effect initially due to the product being mislabeled. The FDA report says, “The back label states Organic Cashews. The front product label states Wegmans Organic Unsalted Dry Roasted Almonds. The front label is [the] correct label for this product.” The February 20 update designated this as a Class II incident, meaning the recalled product is considered to be one “that may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects” according to the FDA’s recall classifications.

Because tree nut allergies (which can include almonds, cashews, macadamia nuts, pecans, and more) are among the most common types of food allergies in the U.S., many people carefully check ingredient labels to ensure they are not accidentally exposed to a potentially serious allergen. “U.S. food labeling laws name 18 tree nuts that must be identified on products,” according to the Cleveland Clinic.

The FDA says 404 cases (containing 12 bags per case) of the mislabeled almonds are being recalled, for a total of 4,848 individual bags.

The recalled product information is:

  • UPC (per the Wegmans website recall notice):  0-77890-30556-0
  • Lot Code: 24305
  • Best By Date: 07/28/2025
  • Recalled by United Natural Trading Inc., doing business as Woodstock Farms, in Edison, NJ

The Wegmans website directs customers to “return the product to the service desk for a full refund.”
